Reading the spec
An oil spec usually has two parts: the viscosity grade, such as 10W-50, and a standard or rating. The stock grade for each bike is in the table above, from its manual.
On most four-stroke dirt bikes the same oil also lubricates the gearbox and the wet clutch. The JASO T903 standard rates four-stroke motorcycle oils for this: MA and MA2 are the wet-clutch ratings, and MA2 is the higher-friction class.1
Why car oil is a risk
Car oils have moved towards friction modifiers for fuel economy. In a motorcycle that shares its oil with the clutch, those modifiers can make the clutch slip.1
Before you order
Buy the grade and rating your manual names, and enough for the capacity listed above. Capacities differ between an oil change with and without a filter change; your manual says which figure applies.
