Opening Round of 2008 MX Championship Makes Triumphant Return to Southern California

After a four-year hiatus, the opening round of the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF returns to the heart of the motocross industry in Southern California for the 13th Annual Giant RV AMA Motocross National presented by Yamaha at Glen Helen Raceway Park, on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25.

Reed Wins Monster Energy® Supercross Championship

Dungey Wins 2nd Consecutive Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout

LAS VEGAS (May 3, 2008)
Team San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., won Monster Energy® Supercross, an FIM World Championship before 39,227 fans at a sold-out Sam Boyd Stadium. Reed, who won the 2004 AMA Supercross class championship, also won the main event. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won the Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout in the AMA Supercross Lites class main event.

Red Bull Honda Racing’s Davi Millsaps opened the AMA Supercross class main event by winning the Progressive Holeshot Award, and Windham trailed in second. Reed started in seventh place. On lap three Windham passed Millsaps and secured the lead. Reed worked his way through the pack and passed Windham for the lead on lap 13 to claim the ninth win of the season. Red Bull Honda Racing’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, finished third.

Season Recap of Monster Energy® Supercross To Air May 4 on CBS Sports

A season recap of the 2008 Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, will air on CBS Sports Sunday, May 4 at Noon ET, one day following the season finale at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.

 

The CBS Sports one-hour season recap show will showcase a rundown of this year’s epic championship battles from the AMA Supercross and AMA Supercross Lites classes. CBS Sports takes the viewer back to Anaheim 1 for a race-by-race look back at the season’s ever-changing storyline.

  • First race was held on March 17th, 1990 and Jeff Matiasevich won on a Kawasaki.
  • This will be the 18th time the gate will drop for an AMA Supercross class race in Sam Boyd Stadium.
  • First time winners: Jeff Matiasevich (1990); Mike LaRocco (1991); Jeff

  • Jeremy McGrath won his first ever Supercross at Sam Boyd, He won the Lites class on a Kawasaki.
  • Jeremy McGrath has won in Las Vegas seven times, three in the Lites class and four in the AMA Supercross class.
  • From 1993-2002, there were 156 rounds of AMA Supercross raced. McGrath missed only one race, which happened to be in Las Vegas 1995.
  • From 1996-2002, McGrath made 110 consecutive starts.
  • In 1997, Doug Henry made history when he won the Las Vegas supercross on a Yamaha four-stroke motorcycle. That was the first time a four-stroke motorcycle won an AMA Supercross event.

A title-worthy performance from Yamaha’s San Manuel rider Chad Reed, after pulling back from a first corner crash to finish second, at Qwest Field in Seattle for the penultimate round of the 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series (also an FIM World Championship) means that the Australian carries a ten point advantage to Las Vegas in search of his second crown next week. Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence claimed the West Region Lites series with his YZ250F.

It’s Windham Again at Monster Energy® Supercross

Lawrence Captures Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites Championship

Torco Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss., won his second consecutive Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship race in front of 48,328 fans at Qwest Field. Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence, of Carlsbad, Calif., won the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class championship. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won the main event and finished second overall in the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class.

Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, won the $1,500 Progressive Holeshot Award to start the AMA Supercross class main event, but Windham quickly passed him and moved into the lead. Team San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed, who came into tonight’s race  13 points ahead of Windham, crashed in turn one and started the race in last place.

Weekly Notes Part 2: Seattle, This Week in Monster Energy® Supercross

Tomorrow’s Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, brings its parity-packed storyline of both classes to Seattle’s Qwest Field. In the Western Regional AMA Supercross class, the championship will be decided between Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence and Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey. In the premier AMA Supercross class Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss., picked up his third main event win of the season and tightened the championship race between he and Team San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ Chad Reed last weekend at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome. The AMA Supercross will air on SPEED Sunday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m., and the AMA Supercross Lites class race will air on SPEED Saturday May 3 at 3:00 p.m. EST.
